Tethered to the Dying Light
Textile Art by Debbie Elsmore
This Exhibition piece explores the experience of near-death encounter, using the form of a sphere to represent both life and the transition beyond it.
It speaks to the quiet moment between life and death, a space suspended in stillness and light. The external surface of the sphere symbolizes the path we travel through life. It invites reflection on the memories we make, the experiences we collect, and the beauty of the world we live in.
It represents everything we have known and the world we have been part of. When viewers look inside the sphere, they see a bright light which calls us forward, symbolising the idea of moving towards death ,often described as "the light at the end of the tunnel’’
Threads stretch from the light, reaching outward, fragile yet unbroken. These are the ties of memory, love, and longing, the invisible strands that keep us tethered, even as we begin to let go. This work reflects on the pull between holding on and moving forward and to find comfort in the idea that we are never truly lost, but gently carried by the echoes of a life well lived
